The first ten days of the month of Zil Hijjah

Allah’s statement is holy and majestic. But His statement takes on a greater magnitude when He takes an oath. On many occasions, Allah has taken an oath in the Qur’an. On one of these, He has taken an oath on the first ten nights of Zil Hijjah:وَالْفَجْرِ وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ
“By the dawn! By the ten nights (of Zil Hijjah).” (89: 1-2). According to the hadith of Mustadrak Hakim and also according to the tafseers, the ten nights refer to the first ten nights of Zil Hijjah as well as the first ten days of that month. By the way, a sahih hadith of Abu Dawood has reported that the Prophet (saw) has stated: There is no other day during which one performs good deeds that Allah Ta`ala loves more than the good deeds performed during the ten days of Zil Hijjah. (Abu Dawood).

Imam Bukhari has reported the same hadith in a different wording. All this indicates the religions worth attached to the first ten days of the month of Zil Hijjah. Tirmizi has reported a hadith, supported by Ibn Majah, where the beloved Prophet (saw) has said:
“There are no days during which Allah loves to be worshipped more than the ten days of Zil Hijjah. Fasting on each day is equivalent to one year’s fasting in reward. And spending one whole night in prayer is akin to spending the night of Lailatul Qadr in ibadat.” (Tirmizi, Ibn Majah, Suyuti).

It should be noted that above all these narrations, is the oath that Allah swore on the ten nights of Zil Hijjah (Surah Fajr).

But the most valuable day is the ninth of Zil Hijjah. Fasting on that day results in the forgiveness of sins of the past year and of the current year together. (Sahih Muslim).

By the way, these sacred days are revered by means of fasting. It has been reported that the holy Prophet (saw) used to fast during the first nine days of Zil Hijjah. (Abu Dawood).

However, fasting is prohibited on the tenth, eleventh, twelfth, and thirteen days of Zil Hijjah, the reason being that these days are devoted originally to the consumption of the meat of Qurbani.

RAISING THE VOICE FOR THE PRAISE OF ALLAH.

Allah Ta’ala likes to be remembered with humility and in a low voice. “And remember your Lord by your tongue and within yourself, humbly and with fear without loudness in words in the mornings and in the afternoons.” (7: 205).

The days of Zil Hijjah are of such a far-reaching nature that Allah Ta’ala wants us to remember Him in a loud voice. Allah Ta’ala has stated: “And remember Allah during the appointed days.” (2: 203). Imam Bukhari has reported that the ‘appointed days’ are the days of Tashreek:بَاب فَضْلِ الْعَمَلِ فِي أَيَّامِ التَّشْرِيقِ وَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ وَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ فِي أَيَّامٍ مَعْلُومَاتٍ أَيَّامُ الْعَشْرِ وَالْأَيَّامُ الْمَعْدُودَاتُ أَيَّامُ التَّشْرِيقِ وَكَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ وَأَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ يَخْرُجَانِ إِلَى السُّوقِ فِي أَيَّامِ الْعَشْرِ يُكَبِّرَانِ وَيُكَبِّرُ النَّاسُ بِتَكْبِيرِهِمَا وَكَبَّرَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ خَلْفَ النَّافِلَةِ

Therefore, it is wajib during five days (from Fajr of 9th Zil Hijjah till Asr of 13the Zil Hijjah) to recite the Takbeer once after every salah. The men will recite it in a loud voice after each farz salaah, whereas the women will do so in a low voice. (Mustadrak Hakim)

Allahou Akbar Allahou Akbar. Laa ilaaha illallahou wallahou Akbar. Allahou Akbar walillahil Hamd.(Darul Qutni)

Since the injunctions of the month of Zil Hijjah are numerous in the Qur’an, let us not be indifferent to Allah’s oath on the ten nights of Zil Hijjah and let us increase our invocations and our remembrance of Allah: Laa ilaaha illallaah, Allahou Akbar, Alhamdulillah(Musnad Ahmad):

“And let us also fast during these 9 days, more especially the 9th of Zil Hijjah, which is the eve of Eid ul Adha(and not necessarily the day when hajees would be in Arafah). Furthermore, those taking share in qurbani, it is recommended for them not to cut their nails and their hairs from whence the moon of Zil Hijjah have been sighted and that until their qurbani is done.(Muslim shareef).

Today Tuesday 30 August 2016 is almost ending of Zul Qa`dah 1437. So if you are taking a share in qurbani, do cut your nails and shave your unwanted hairs today as we will be sighting the moon of the sacred month of Zul Hijjah soon insha Allah(depending on its visibility and calendar of your country).

⇨ NOT MORE VIRTUOUS THAN RAMADHAAN.

Although the first 10 days of Zul Hijjah are virtuous, but it is wrong to say that they are more virtuous than Ramadhaan. Shariah is the whole Qur-aan and sunnah and not one piece of puzzle or a hadith. Besides the virtues above, note that Ramadhaan is more virtous than 10 days of Zul Hijjah because of the following:
1. The virtues of the 10 days of Zul Hijjah are from Tafseers and not from direct text of the Qur-aan. The Qur-aan directly mentions the virtues of Ramadhaan: (2:185).

‘It is during the month of Ramadhaan that the Qur-aan was revealed…the one who finds the month, then he should fast.’’(2:185)

Fasting in Ramadhaan is more virtuous than Zul Hijjah because they are farzs.

2. The beloved prophet Swalallahou `Alaihi Wasallam used to prepare for Ramadhaan as from the moon of Sha`baan. And it is said that he did not cared so much as for that month-Musnad Ahmad. (not even for Zul Hijjah):

3. The virtues of Ramadhaan of daily visit of Jibra`-il a.s., generosity, ibaadahs until feet swelled, etc are only present in Ramadhaan.

4. Also note that Hazrat Aisha r.a. said that the beloved never fasted the 10 days of Zul Hijjah(Abu Dawood):حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ الْأَسْوَدِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ مَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَائِمًا الْعَشْرَ قَطُّ ابو داود
But nonetheless, do take care to benefit from the virtues of the 10 days of Zul Hijjah as mentioned in the beginning of the article.
