Please send Salaam for me to Rasoolullah (saw)

It is sunnah and respect to send salaam to someone before addressing him or her for a message or a quest. Reported in Bukhari shareef that when Hazrat Umar bin Khattab r.a. was savagely injured by the slave of Mughirah, on the death bed, Hazrat Umar r.a. told Ibn Abbas r.a. TO SAY SALAAM TO HAZRAT AISHA R.A. and requested her to give him place in her house for his qabr to be made with the beloved prophet SAW and Abu Bakr r.a.(Bukhari):

Salaams was commonly given to living at the time of Rasouloullah by Allah Ta`ala himself to Khadijah and Abu Bakr, Salaam of Jibra-il to Aisha r.a., salaam of uthman r.a. to the beloved prophet SAW etc.

But note that contrary to what is being instructed by some people, it is a common practice by prophets a.s. and sahabas to send salaams to someone who is not present also. We find between the ahadiths that salaams has been transmitted especially to Rasouloullah Swalallahou `Alaihi Wasallam when he was alive and also when he was in qabr also. Please do consider the following ahadiths as for salaams on Rasouloullah Swalallahou `Alaihi Wasallam after he passed away:

AHADITHS ON SALAAM ON RASOULOULLAH Swalallahou `Alaihi Wasallam:

Muhammad bin Munkadir r.a. said that I came by Jabir Ibn Abdillah r.a. at the time that he was dying. So I told him to send salaam to Rasouloullah (Swalallahou `Alaihi Wasallam)-Ibn Majah.

It is reported that pious souls (rouhs) meet their beloved ones right after death. So since Jabir will meet Rasouloullah SAW, so do send him salaam on my side.

If you are not satisfied with the sanad of this hadith, then know that a sahih hadith of  Tirmizi report that Hazrat Ibrahim a.s. did send salaam to the ummah of Rasouloullah Swalallahou `Alaihi Wasallam in Mi`raj. And at that time, me and you was not alive:

The beloved prophet SAW said: ‘‘During the night of ascension, I met Ibrahim a.s. He told me: SAY SALAAM TO YOUR UMMAH FROM MY SIDE…’’(Sahih- Tirmizi).

Me and you was not alive that time and hence this prove that we may send salaam to Rasouloullah SAW to someone visiting his qabr in Madinah. When hearing this salaam, say WA ‘ALAIHIS SALAAM WARAHMATULLAH.

And from amongst the generation after the beloved prophet SAW, it has been a noble practice to send salaam to Rasouloullah SAW through someone visiting Madinah Munawwarah. It is officially reported that when Umar bin Abdul Aziz used to send administrative letters to Madinah Munawwarah, then he would tell the messenger of the letter to send salaam to Rasouloullah SAW when he reached the qabr Mubarak Swalallahou `Alaihi Wasallam:

Yazid Ibn Abi Sa`eed said I came to Umar bin Abdul Aziz and then when he made my farewell(I was leaving), he told me: ‘I need to tell you something. When you reach Madinah, you will see the qabr of Rasouloullah SAW, so do say Salaam from my side to the beloved prophet SAW…’

(As Shifa fi ta`rifil Huquqil Mustapha-Muzila)

Durre Mansoor-Suyuti:

Shu`abul Imaan:

Since it was famously a noble practice from Sahabas and Tabi`eens to send salaam to the qabr of Rasouloullah SAW, then it is recommended to tell someone going for Umrah to send salaam to Rasouloullah SAW. This does not negate that we read douroud and salaam on Nabi SAW from anywhere in the world.

So if someone tells you to say Salaam to Rasouloullah SAW, tell him Insha Allah. Then when you reach the qabr Mubarak, say softly: ‘That person(mention the name) sent salaam to You Ya RasoulAllah.’’

Two requests from my side to all those planning to go Umrah soon:

1. First, take the pain to put your Ihraam in Baitul Muqaddas-Jerusalem. It is important for us and Masjidul Aqsa. Read on that on http://islam-qna.org/Articles.asp?QID=339&LN=.

2. If you remember, say Salaam from Ayoob bin Ismael and Family to the beloved prophet Swalallahou `Alaihi Wasallam when you reach the Rowdha Mubarak in Madinah Munawwarah.   Jazaakumullah Khairan.
