Hijamah is the extraction of blood directly from the skin by pulling directly from an instrument or by other means of pulling pressures. It is a prescribed sunnah from the medicine of the beloved prophet SAW. But we need an experienced person to perform this extraction.

It is reported on the authority of Tirmizi that during Mi`raj, the angels continuously counselled the beloved prophet SAW to prescribe His ummah to have recourse to Hijamah-Tirmizi.

قَالَ سُئِلَ أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ عَنْ كَسْبِ الْحَجَّامِ فَقَالَ احْتَجَمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَجَمَهُ أَبُو طَيْبَةَ فَأَمَرَ لَهُ بِصَاعَيْنِ مِنْ طَعَامٍ وَكَلَّمَ أَهْلَهُ فَوَضَعُوا عَنْهُ مِنْ خَرَاجِهِ وَقَالَ إِنَّ أَفْضَلَ مَا تَدَاوَيْتُمْ بِهِ الْحِجَامَةُ أَوْ هُوَ مِنْ أَمْثَلِ دَوَائِكُمْ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ حَدَّثَنَا مَرْوَانُ يَعْنِي الْفَزَارِيَّ عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ قَالَ سُئِلَ أَنَسٌ عَنْ كَسْبِ الْحَجَّامِ فَذَكَرَ بِمِثْلِهِ غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ إِنَّ أَفْضَلَ مَا تَدَاوَيْتُمْ بِهِ الْحِجَامَةُ وَالْقُسْطُ الْبَحْرِيُّ وَلَا تُعَذِّبُوا صِبْيَانَكُمْ بِالْغَمْزِ

Reported in Bukhari and Muslim that Hazrat Annas r.a. said that the beloved prophet SAW said: ‘’The best medicine that one can have is Hijamah…and Oud wood.’’(Bukhari, Muslim)

The beloved prophet SAW prescribed to burn Oud wood to cure children`s throat sickness and other sickness. Why not burn a piece of Oud wood every Friday at home?

From memory, I can remember reading that Hazrat Ibn Abbaas r.a., when feeling his heart beating heavily, he called the doctor to have a Hijamah.

Also note that Hijamah is not only a cure, but when done on the head, hijamah is a protection for these sicknesses: madness or psychiatric illnesses , leprosy, albinos, tooth ache and sleepiness(lethargy).(Tabrani-Ibn Umar)

It is best to have hijamah on 17th, 19th and 21st of Lunar(Moon) calendar. BUT DEFINITELY AVOID DOING HIJAMAH ON WENESDAYS.(IBN MAJAH)

It is permissible to have cupping during fasting-Shami, Bukhari. Probably, basing on such ahadiths that ulamas concluded that it is permissible to have intravenous injection during fasting.

Note that if Hijamah in the head is done without prescription, then this can be harmful to memory.

I advise to have hijamah on the back for first time and then try to repeat the hijamah as the ‘’cupping doctor’’ prescribe. Know that hijamah is a good cure for infections of the body. Don`t do hijamah by inexperienced person.

If you never had a cupping during your life, then it is great time to have one now. Follow the prescription of the sunnah as the beloved prophet SAW prescribed it as the best of medicines.
