Is there any mystery in throwing stones at shaytan in meccah? i mean where do these stones go?

It is said that the ones that their pelting are accepted their stones disappears. And that the nonaccepted ones stays down there. That is why it is not permissible to pelt from left over stones. Someone mentioned that there is no big amount of stones left after pelting. Wallahu a`lam.
