*Permissibility of reading Qur-aan in graveyards/qabrastaan*

*PERMISSIBILITY OF READING QUR-AAN IN GRAVEYARDS/QABRASTAAN.*
 
 *Some people has unfortunately written officially on the Board of the graveyards of Sahabahs r.a. in some parts of the world that it is bid`ah to read orally Qur-aan in the graveyards. I have noted that this opinion exists but know that the proof for the contrary also exist. When asked about the official writing on the graveyard board, they answered that they did not find any hadith of the beloved prophet Swalallahou `Alaihi Wasallam about reading Qur-aan in the graveyards/Qabrastaan. We will try to put forward the proofs and opinion that it is permissible to read Qur-aan in the graveyards. We may disagree but with respect.* *The respect overhere is that it should not have been written or said in loud bayaans in the Qabrastaan while other opinions exists:*
 
*First proof that one may read Qur-aan ayahs in muslim graveyards is a sahih hadith of Tabrani whereby a Sahabah, Ala ibn Lujaaj saying to his son  that when I die, then do my qabr Lahd`s way(that is dig the qabr from the side at the bottom), when you put me down the qabr, say ‘’Bismillahi wa `alaa millati Rasoulillah Swalallahou Alaihi Wasallam’’. Then put sand on my qabr and make a hump on top. Then read by my head(after burial): the opening ayats of Surah Baqarah and then read its finishing ayats. Because i heard  Rasouloullah Swalallahou `Alaihi Wasallam said so.’’(Tabrani)*

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بن مُحَمَّدِ بن أَبِي أُسَامَةَ الْحَلَبِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ح، وَحَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بن دُحَيْمٍ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ح، وَحَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بن إِسْحَاقَ التُّسْتَرِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بن بَحْرٍ، قَالُوا: حَدَّثَنَا مُبَشِّرُ بن إِسْمَاعِيلَ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بن الْعَلاءِ بن اللَّجْلاجِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: قَالَ لِي أَبِي:"يَا بنيَّ، إِذَا أَنَا مُتُّ فَأَلْحِدْنِي، فَإِذَا وَضَعْتَنِي فِي لَحْدِي، فَقُلْ: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَعَلَى مِلَّةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ، ثُمَّ سِنَّ عَلَيَّ الثَّرَى سِنًّا، ثُمَّ اقْرَأْ عِنْدَ رَأْسِي بِفَاتِحَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ، وَخَاتِمَتِهَا، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ".

*This hadith is reported by Suyuti, Tabrani, Ibn Hajar, Mulla Ali Qari and certified sahih by Haithami.*

وعن عبد الرحمن ابن العلاء بن اللجلاج قال قال لي أبي يا بني إذا أنا مت فالحد لي لحداً فإذا وضعتني في لحدي فقل بسم الله وعلى ملة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ثم سن التراب على سناً ثم اقرأ عند رأسي بفاتحة البقرة وخاتمتها فإني سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول ذلك. رواه الطبراني في الكبير ورجال موثقون

*Secondly, reported that Imaam Ahmad bin Hambal r.a. had the opinion that reading Qur-aan in qabrastaan was Bid`ah in the beginning but when he learned about the above hadith, he made rujou` and told people to read Qur-aan in graveyard/Qabrastaan:*

وأخبرني الحسن بن أحمد الوراق ، قال : حدثني علي بن موسى الحداد ، وكان صدوقا ، وكان ابن حماد المقرئ يرشد إليه ، فأخبرني قال : « كنت مع أحمد بن حنبل ، ومحمد بن قدامة الجوهري في جنازة ، فلما دفن الميت جلس رجل ضرير يقرأ عند القبر ، فقال له أحمد : يا هذا ، » إن القراءة عند القبر بدعة فلما خرجنا من المقابر قال محمد بن قدامة لأحمد بن حنبل : يا أبا عبد الله ، ما تقول في مبشر الحلبي ؟ قال : ثقة ، قال : كتبت عنه شيئا ؟ قال : نعم ، قال : فأخبرني مبشر ، عن عبد الرحمن بن العلاء بن اللجلاج ، عن أبيه ، أنه أوصى إذا دفن أن يقرأ عند رأسه بفاتحة البقرة وخاتمتها ، وقال : سمعت ابن عمر يوصي بذلك . فقال له أحمد : فارجع ، فقل للرجل يقرأ

*Later on, Imaam Ahmad r.a. used to tell people that when you enter graveyards, then gift the dead people in the graves with the reading of Surah Fatihah, Surah Ahad, Surah Falaq and Surah Naas(Nawawi).*

قال النووي في الأذكار قال محمد بن أحمد المروزي سمعت أحمد بن حنبل يقول إذا دخلتم المقابر فاقرؤا بفاتحة الكتاب والمعوذتين وقل هو الله أحد واجعلوا ثواب ذلك لأهل المقابر فإنه يصل إليهم والمقصود من زيارة القبور للزائر الاعتبار وللمزور الانتفاع بدعائه
 
*Furthermore, we find the same wasiyah of Ibn Umar r.a. to his sons to read the beginning of Surah Baqarah by the head and the end of Baqarah by the feet of the qabr/grave.(Tafseer Tabari)*
 
*In fact, there is a mawqoof riwayah of Ibn Umar on the same as above.*
 
وأخرج الطبراني والبيهقي في الشعب عن ابن عمر قال : سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول « إذا مات أحدكم فلا تحبسوه وأسرعوا به إلى قبره ، وليقرأ عند رأسه بفاتحة البقرة ، وعند رجليه بخاتمة سورة البقرة ، في قبره » .

*Please note that Sahabahs will not practice upon something that they never heard Rasouloullah Swalallahou `Alaihi Wasallam. Ibn Umar r.a. was considered amongst the senior ulamas of sahabahs. Same hadith/practice is also reported from Abu Hureirah r.a.*
 
*Paradoxically, those who say that Qur-aan should not be read in Qabrastaan says that Surah Fatihah should compulsorily be read during Janazah Salaah(Although not hanafis opinion). And we bring to their notice there are ahadiths that Rasouloullah Swalallahou `Alaihi Wasallam did pray exceptional janazah salaah in Qabrastaan(Bukhari):*

حدثنا سليمان بن حرب قال حدثنا حماد بن زيد عن ثابت عن أبي رافع عن أبي هريرة
أن رجلا أسود أو امرأة سوداء كان يقم المسجد فمات فسأل النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم عنه فقالوا مات قال أفلا كنتم آذنتموني به دلوني على قبره أو قال قبرها فأتى قبرها فصلى عليها

*As such according to them, the beloved prophet Swalallahou `Alaihi Wasallam did read Surah Fatihah during that Salaah and that was in Qabrastaan/Graveyard. Bringing permissibility of reading Quran in the graveyards.*
 
*As such, according to their following trend, this hadith has rendered a paradox to what has been written on Qabrastaan board.*
 
*Furthermore there are aathaar that people in the past used to read Qur-aan in the graveyards. Ibn Rajab report that 221 khatmes of Qur-aan was done by the Qabr of Sheikh Abu Mansoor r.a.:*
 
وقال السلفي: ذكر لي المؤتمن في ثاني جمعة من وفاة الشيخ أبي منصور: أن اليوم ختموا على رأس قبره مائتي وإحدى وعشرين ختمة.
 
*Although many diverted opinions of the 4 imaams reported in the beginning, but there seems to be unanimity of their mazhabs` latest view as permissible to read Qur-aan by heart to gift the dead in the muslim graveyard.*

اختلف العلماء في وصول ثواب العبادات البدنية المحضة كالصلاة وتلاوة القرآن إلى غير فاعلها على رأيين: رأي الحنفية والحنابلة ومتأخري الشافعية والمالكية بوصول القراءة للميت إذا كان بحضرته، أو دعا له عقبها، ولو غائباً؛ لأن محل القراءة تنزل فيه الرحمة والبركة، والدعاء عقبها أرجى للقبول.

Shami: Not makrooh to read Quran by graves. (Mazhab Hanafi)

بِأَنَّ الْمُخْتَارَ أَنَّهُ لَا يُكْرَهُ تَطْيِينُ الْقُبُورِ وَلَا الْقِرَاءَةُ عِنْدَهَا

*It is reported in Sahih Ibn Hibaan that Rasouloullah Swalallahou `Alaihi Wasallam said:’’Read Surah Yassin by your dead.’’(Abu Dawood;Ibn Majah;Ahmad and Sahih Ibn Hibaan)*
 
*Many ulamas have given meaning of both to read Yassin by the dying person and also by the Qabr.*
 
*And also note that ulamas in the chapter of Faza-il/ Virtues have recommended to read Surah Yasin, Surah Takasur, Surah Kaafiroun, Surah Ikhlaas, Surah Falaq and Surah Naas.. They said that it is a general practice of muslims around the world to read Qur-aan in graveyards(Samarqandi; Sharhe Mishkaat):*
 
وَبِمَا أَخْرَجَ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ السَّمَرْقَنْدِيُّ فِي فَضَائِلِ { قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ } عَنْ عَلِيٍّ مَرْفُوعًا : مَنْ مَرَّ عَلَى الْمَقَابِرِ وَقَرَأَ { قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ } إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ مَرَّةً ثُمَّ وَهَبَ أَجْرَهُ لِلْأَمْوَاتِ أُعْطِيَ مِنْ الْأَجْرِ بِعَدَدِ الْأَمْوَاتِ . وَبِمَا أَخْرَجَ أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ سَعْدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الزَّنْجَانِيُّ فِي فَوَائِدِهِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَنْ دَخَلَ الْمَقَابِرَ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ فَاتِحَةَ الْكِتَابِ وَقُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ وَأَلْهَاكُمْ التَّكَاثُرُ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنِّي جَعَلْت ثَوَابَ مَا قَرَأْت مِنْ كَلَامِك لِأَهْلِ الْمَقَابِرِ مِنْ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ كَانُوا شُفَعَاءَ لَهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ تَعَالَى " ، وَبِمَا أَخْرَجَ صَاحِبُ الْخِلَالِ بِسَنَدِهِ عَنْ أَنَسٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " مَنْ دَخَلَ الْمَقَابِرَ فَقَرَأَ سُورَةَ يس خَفَّفَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَكَانَ لَهُ بِعَدَدِ مَنْ فِيهَا حَسَنَاتٌ " . وَهَذِهِ الْأَحَادِيثُ وَإِنْ كَانَتْ ضَعِيفَةً فَمَجْمُوعُهَا يَدُلُّ عَلَى أَنَّ لِذَلِكَ أَصْلًا وَأَنَّ الْمُسْلِمِينَ مَا زَالُوا فِي كُلِّ مِصْرٍ وَعَصْرٍ يَجْتَمِعُونَ وَيَقْرَءُونَ لِمَوْتَاهُمْ مِنْ غَيْرِ نَكِيرٍ فَكَانَ ذَلِكَ إِجْمَاعًا ، ذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ كُلَّهُ الْحَافِظُ شَمْسُ الدِّينِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَاحِدِ الْمَقْدِسِيُّ الْحَنْبَلِيُّ فِي جُزْءٍ أَلَّفَهُ فِي الْمَسْأَلَةِ اِنْتَهَى مَا فِي الْمِرْقَاةِ بِتَقْدِيمٍ وَتَأْخِيرٍ .
 
*Although some are weak narrations, but their repetition in different books and different riwayahs brought the ummah to accept them in virtues/faza-il. Reported from Hazrat Ali r.a. that if one read 11 times surah ikhlaas while visiting graveyard, then one will receive the amount of sawaab of the number of graves in that graveyard.(Darul Qutni;Tuhwatul Ahwazi)*
 
*Nonetheless, the above mentioned in first lieu of the article was sufficient for proof that it is permissible to read Qur-aan in the graveyards. And when there are diverted views on certain issue, then there should be tolerance on that issue. It is against protocols to write on the board of the graveyard or give daily bayaans on the issue while valid permissibility proofs exist.*
